TMB Construction and Restoration Outlines What Fall Data Mean for Older Adults’ Home Safety

FONTANA, CA – October 29, 2026 – PRESSADVANTAGE –

TMB Construction and Restoration encourages homeowners to include fall prevention in aging in place remodeling plans, complementing its guidance on avoiding remodeling cost overruns. The guidance comes as Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data show that the age-adjusted fall death rate among adults 65 and older rose 21%, from 64.7 per 100,000 in 2018 to 78.4 in 2024. The figures come from National Vital Statistics System data released in 2026.

CDC’s Older Adult Falls Data page, which presents those rates, also states that more than 14 million older adults, or one in four, report falling each year. The agency says falls are the leading cause of injury for adults 65 and older. CDC additionally links older adult falls to about 300,000 hip fracture hospitalizations each year.

Separately, AARP Research’s 2024 Home & Community Preferences Among Adults 18 and Older, published in December 2024, presents findings from a survey of 3,090 adults. It found that 75% of adults 50 and older want to stay in their current homes. The report also states that 43% of adults 50 and older are looking to make changes so their homes can accommodate future physical limitations.

Among those planning modifications, 72% want bathroom upgrades such as grab bars and non-slip tile, while 71% anticipate changes such as ramps or chairlifts. The survey was conducted in English and Spanish in summer 2024. These findings highlight home safety for older adults as a planning priority for families and individual homeowners alike.

November is National Family Caregivers Month, and holiday gatherings often bring families into older relatives’ homes. The return to standard time in early November also brings earlier darkness, which affects how well stairways and entrances are lit. Families reviewing a relative’s home during this period can start with federal fall prevention guidance.

CDC guidance on making a home safer recommends removing items that could cause trips, adding grab bars inside and outside the tub or shower and next to the toilet, and installing railings on both sides of stairs. The agency also advises adding more or brighter light bulbs so the home has plenty of light.

CDC also publishes a home fall prevention checklist for older adults titled Check for Safety. The checklist is part of the agency’s STEADI materials on preventing older adult falls. Using the checklist to assess a relative’s home is one way families can identify needed changes.

Grab bars require secure installation. For reference, the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design require grab bars and their supporting structures in covered buildings to withstand 250 pounds of force at any point.

TMB describes its remodeling process as beginning with an initial consultation and an in-person space review of a room’s condition and layout. The company says it schedules the work to keep the project on track from start to finish. It also says it manages permitting as part of the project.

AARP reports that Original Medicare generally does not pay for grab bars or for home modifications such as wheelchair ramps. Some Medicare Advantage plans allow up to $500 a year for items such as handrails or shower stools, though benefits vary by plan.
